Ms. Nilofar Bakhtiar (former federal minister, advisor to the Prime Minister and an elected member in the senate of Pakistan served for 9 years). Currently, Ms. Nilofar is serving as the chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), a prestigious institution established to work towards women empowerment in Pakistan.
She is a renowned and distinguished social and political activist with more than thirty years of experience at national and international arenas and commands leadership of the poor and marginalized communities. She has, during the past three decades, devoted herself to the cause of gender justice and woman empowerment and has earned a place for herself at the highest forums of civil society and governance.
She has given leadership and direction to grass root communities and has enabled them to articulate their voices and ensure visibility. During her political career, Ms. Nilofar worked extensively on gender equality, violence against women and regional cooperation.People-centered development, democratic decentralization and issues of equity have been areas of major focus for her.
To her achievements, she hosted several national and international conferences including the UN conference on MDGs held in Islamabad. In addition, she has the honor of leading Pakistan at the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Conference, SAARC Women Ministers Conference and the SAARC Tourism Ministers Conference, among others.
Legislation on Honor Killing in Pakistan in 2003, is one example among many of her untiring commitments to the cause of gender equality. Initiatives like establishment of shelter homes for the women and children and such other initiatives are the brainchild of Ms. Nilofar Bakhtiar.
Moreover, she has vast experience leadership of successful public affairs reforms and advocacy for legislative initiatives. Decades of experience in various national and international organizations at the board and senior management levels, including two years as the first woman International Director of Lions Clubs International
Served nine years as Chair/Vice Chair, Board of Directors, Pakistan Red Crescent Society with great strides made in relations with National Societies of Qatar, Iran, UAE, Turkey, Germany, USA, UK, and Canada, among others.
